DeepSeek Orders 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT, but Delivery Could Take More Than a Year
The order is not the problem. Capacity for high-end memory and similar parts is the bottleneck, so this large order can only be delivered slowly.
01What happened
According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, DeepSeek plans to deploy at least 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT chips at its data center in Inner Mongolia. Reported on September 4, 2026. The goal is gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure.
02Key numbers
The first number is 160,000. It is DeepSeek's order alone. Most of it will run the company's own models for inference. There are no plans to use it for training at this time.
The second number is low hundreds of thousands. This is a rough size given by the sources. It is the level that Huawei's 950DT output for this year has been pushed down to, after shortages of parts such as high-end memory.
The third number is more than one year. That is how long it could take to fill this order.
03In short
Inference is the computing that runs after a model is trained. It answers questions and does the work. This order will take up a large part of Huawei's capacity this year.
The order can be signed in a day. But parts capacity does not grow in a day. So the bottleneck is memory, and it cannot be fixed in the short term.
04Why it matters
When judging whether a big AI chip order will ship on time, do not look only at how large the order is. Look at the tightest part. Here, the tightest part is memory. So watch the delivery time figure first.
